KHS Students Assist Angeline School and Industries With Website Project

Students from the website management and journalism classes at Kenton High School visited Angeline School and Industries in Wyandot County to assist them with a website design project. Angeline provides a comprehensive program serving children and adults with developmental disabilities. The students were welcomed by Todd Dilley, Angeline’s Superintendent. Following a tour of the facilities, students conducted interviews, gathered information, and documented some of the daily happenings at Angeline.

Mr. Funkhouser stated, “This community service project allows our students to apply their technology and design skills in a real world setting. Visiting Angeline School and Industries provided the students with a better understanding of the services that are provided to children and adults with developmental disabilities. They are excited about redesigning Angeline’s website to make it a more effective tool for communicating with the community that Angeline serves.”

Participating students include Sean Castle, Evan Crabtree, Brady Hood, Lucas King, Ryan Leathem, Candace Morrison, Nelson Mustain, Joshua Pettit, William Ruddle, Trevor Sparks, Ashley Vanzant, Tyler Vermillion, and Jason Whitaker.

“Paying It Forward” Continues To Be a Focus at KHS.

As the principal of Kenton High School, I am extremely proud of how our students and staff members continue to be actively involved in many different community service and fund-raising projects to support charitable endeavors. Here are some examples of the activities students and staff have been involved in this school year.
*The National Honor Society members participated in a Toy Drive at Christmas and collected and delivered a vanload of toys to Love Inc. They also collected used cell phones that were then reprogrammed and sent overseas for use by our military personnel. Members also assisted with the Hardin Central evening book fair by reading books to students and stuffed envelopes for the Kenton Excellence For Education Foundation.
*The KHS Leadership Team organized the annual WBL Food Drive in November in which the students and staff donated over 1400 food items and $130 in cash to the local Helping Hands Food Pantry. Kenton HS won the WBL competition this year!
*Mrs. Crates’ Life Skills class have developed a school wide recycling program. We now recycle our paper, plastic, and aluminum cans throughout the building. She has worked with the Hardin County Solid Waste and Recycling Facility to obtain recycling bins and located them in every classroom and office area. Plastic and aluminum receptacles are placed in the cafeteria for collection. All recyclables are transported to the local recycling vendor on a weekly basis. Over 6000 pounds of paper, plastic and aluminum was recycled at KHS this year!
*Twelve seniors were active volunteers in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program of Hardin County. They mentored at-risk elementary students once a week throughout the year.
*The FCA chapter and their advisor, Mr. Dudek, sponsored a Hat and Glove Tree during Christmas time. They collected winter hats and gloves for needy children in the community. They also sponsored “Cans for Pancakes” in which students could enjoy a pancake breakfast with the donation of canned goods for the annual food drive.
*Our third annual fund raising drive for the fight against cancer had a different focus this year. One of our students, freshman Mikayla Hollan, is battling a very rare and difficult form of cancer called synovial sarcoma. In conjunction with Winter Spirit Week, our students and staff collected $3000 during this weeklong campaign. We exceeded last year’s total of $1660. This event involved students bringing in pennies (as well as other denominations) in an attempt to “stall” their teacher from teaching that day’s lesson. The teachers could not begin class until they counted all of the money, one penny at a time. This took place during the week of February 8th through 12th and a different class period was used each day. The culmination of the week was a school wide assembly with competitions between students and staff. All of these proceeds were used to assist the Hollan family during this most difficult time.
*The annual Red Cross Blood Drive also exceeded last year’s total. This year our students and staff members donated 70 pints of blood. A total of 95 people attempted to give blood that day.
*The annual Hardin Memorial Hospital Walk For Your Health Fitness Walk is coming up in May. Other schools, as well as many students and staff members at KHS, support this activity.
*On several occasions throughout this school year, our staff participated in fund-raising activities through Friday Dress Down Day donations for a variety of charitable causes. Some of them include raising money for Mikayla Hollan, WBL Food Drive, Paul Heilman Memorial Scholarship Fund, and for a staff member who underwent heart bypass surgery and was out of sick leave. This year’s staff donations have totaled over $2000! Coach Woody Hayes’ motto of “Paying It Forward” is alive and well at KHS.
