“Stalling For Hollan” is a Huge Success at KHS

During the first week of February, Kenton High School Student Council organized a Winter Spirit Week and Penny Stall donation.

Stalling for Hollan a Huge Success at KHS!

Stalling for Hollan a Huge Success at KHS!

During the week, the student body had a chance to “stall” out their teachers by bringing in pennies. In this event, the students brought in their pennies, change, and/or dollars in an attempt to keep the teacher counting the change and, in turn, get a free study hall for that class. Typically, the money is given to “Pennies for Patients”, a charity that supports children with leukemia. This year the donations were instead given to freshman Mikayla Hollan’s family, in order to support Hollan’s fight against Synovial Sarcoma.
The newly nicknamed “Stallin’ for the Hollan” program was a huge success. The total amount raised was $3,000, which is up nearly $1,300 from last year’s profit.
“I was very shocked that a high school full of people that had never met me would go to such great lengths to support me,” stated Hollan, when asked how she felt about the Penny Stall. “It’s crazy, but very much appreciated.”
Along with the penny stall, the winter spirit week was filled with other activities including specific dress days such as 80s/90s day, multiplicity day, cowboy/cowgirl day, and fashion disaster day. To further the spirit, music was played in the hallways between classes.
On the final day, students wore yellow, the official cancer awareness color of Synovial Sarcoma, in support of the Hollan Family and a pep rally was held. Unlike the typical pep rally, this one included a relay race, in which classes competed against each other and the teachers, a student-versus-teacher dance off, and pies being thrown in the faces of Mr. Thrush and Mr. Abbott.
Mr. Abbott commented, “The students seem to really enjoy the activities throughout the week and we had great participation. There was an excitement in the air as donation from the penny stall poured in. Our students and staff wanted to support Mikayla in her battle with this rare and difficult form of cancer. We were excited that Mikayla was able to attend our pep rally. I would like to congratulate Mr. Thrush and our student council for their efforts in making this week an overwhelming success.”

Buckeye Boys/Girls State

Information will be given to all juniors, the week of January 19th, about Buckeye Boys/Girls State.  This is a great “hands on” week for juniors with an interest in the workings of the Ohio government.  The participants learn about the agencies and levels of Ohio government by running  a mythical state government.

Applications for Buckeye Boys/Girls State are due February 5th to the Guidance Office.

January 25th Financial Aid Meeting

A reminder to junior/senior students and parents:

The final financial aid meeting for the school year will be  held Monday, January 25th, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.  LeeAnn Timmerman, Financial Aid Officer, will be discussing basic financial aid.  She will also talk about filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA form is required to determine federal financial aid eligibility.  Colleges also use FAFSA information to award financial aid packages to families.  Seniors, make sure you file the FAFSA by the deadline set by the college.
