Mock Trial is a year-long, social studies elective course for KHS Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. The instructor is Mrs. Cross, who is a high school teacher and a practicing attorney. Team coaches are: Patrick Potts of Roof Law Firm in Kenton and Christian Bagnato, 3rd year Law Student at Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in Ada.
This course prepares students to participate in the statewide mock trial competition conducted annually by the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE) —http://www.oclre.org/aws/OCLRE/pt/sp/programs_mocktrial
It is important to understand that not only are students members of the class, they are also members of KHS’ Mock Trial Team. Each student, no matter their team role (attorney, witness or legal researcher/timekeeper) will be accountable to their fellow teammates for participating in the competitions.
Here are the OCLRE competition dates that all Mock Trial students must attend:
- District Competition- January 20, 2017 (Northwest Ohio area);
- Regional Competition- February 10, 2017 (either Columbus or Dayton); and
- State Competition- March 9-11, 2017 (Franklin County Courthouse — If team qualifies!)
In addition to preparing for the competitions, students will learn to about the law, court procedures, judicial system and legal careers while also improving their critical thinking skills. There are also guest speakers and field trips planned for this class so students gain as much “real life” exposure to the legal field as possible.
